Research abstract

65607 As energy production continues to raise atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels worldwide, advanced sensors are required to improve our understanding of the impact of excess CO2 on climate, agriculture, and natural resources. Certain laser remote sensing technologies could fill the need. However, they must first be optimized and incorporated into large-scale demonstrations of terrestrial and ocean CO2 sequestration concepts. This project will develop an eyesafe, coherent, differential-absorption laser (DIAL) radar system, capable of very sensitive range-resolved measurement of CO2 concentration, and able to provide CO2 flux divergence over large volumes of atmosphere. Phase I will: (1) define the laser remote sensing instrument for sequestration and carbon cycle measurement; (2) perform detailed analysis and lidar process modeling; (3) conduct experiments to verify or modify performance; and (4) execute a preliminary design of the eyesafe coherent DIAL instrument. Phase II will produce a turn-key system appropriate for DOE field use in relevant CO2 experiments. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Remote spectroscopic DIAL technology should be applicable to pollution monitoring, airborne biohazard detection and tracking, meteorology, and advanced remote vibration measurement lidar systems. The requisite narrow-band, broadly tunable solid-state lasers also could find use in ultra-sensitive laser spectroscopy instruments and space-based coherent lidar, where very large platform-induced Doppler shifts can be compensated for by frequency offset-locking techniques.
