Research abstract

"LANCORP Advanced Systems Incorporated, tasked under the NAVSEASmall Business Innovative Research Project N00-124 "Aerosol CanAvoiding Device" Phase I, designed and constructed an automatedaerosol can evacuator and compacting device that is small enoughto fit aboard ship and economical to pay back in less than ayear. This device, called the CANPIRE, is air operated allowingfor a can to be processed every ten seconds, evacuating theentire contents into an integral 55-gallon drum and thendepositing the recyclable steel can into a separate receptaclefor salvage or disposal. The CANPIRE allows for the disposal ofthe intended waste, the remaining contents of the can, but doingit in a efficient and safe manner controlling all of the effluentand residual vapors.BENEFITS: The Canpire will benefit not only the Navy by reducing the cost to dispose of aerosol cans by at least 80 percent, but it will benefit the general public and industry by providing a practical, easy, efficient and low costmethod to recycle aerosol cans."
