Research abstract
65876 Data is driving the growth of throughput demand in current and emerging optical networks. In addition, as optical networks are used more and more for distributed computing applications, requirements are introduced for scalability, reconfigurability, agility, etc. This project will combine current approaches in wavelength division multiplexing and time division multiplexing into a novel implementation of optical code division multiplexing (O-CDM) that is capable of solving the throughput demand as well as the distributed computing requirements. The O-CDM architecture is scalable and has higher throughput than wavelength division multiplexing and time division multiplexing combined, and it acts as a distributed switch for agile optical networking and distributed computing applications. In Phase I, an architecture and preliminary design of optical code division multiplexing with 32 user pairs, each operating at 2.5 Gb/s, will be developed. Signal processing to minimize the optical code division multiplexing crosstalk will be developed, and the system concept will be exercised and demonstrated by means of detailed computer simulations. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: Optical code division multiplexing should readily operate at 2.5 Gb/s (SONET OC-48), with 32 user pairs, and transport over spans of 100 km. It should be appropriate for access, feeder, and metropolitan networks.
