Research abstract
Not Available Advanced ceramic-based composite heat exchanger has the potential to reduce weight, improve ECS performance, increase aircraft payload, and decrease life-cycle cost. Allcomp has assembled a strong and experienced team to address all relevant issues to design and produce a functional composite heat exchanger for V22 at affordable price. It is also our belief the developed technology can be easily extended to other naval A/C platforms. It is our intent to leverage on the on-going Air Force funded F/A-18 prototype C-C Heat Exchanger activity. However, critical issues that were not addressed under the Air Force program are identified for further evaluation under this proposal. Four key issues will be investigated under Phase I effort. It includes cost (material and process), environmental resistance (oxidation and corrosion), carbon based joining and design methodology. Innovated solutions will be identified and validated for heat exchanger application. Full-size test panels and quarter-size cores will be fabricated for material characterization and manufacturing process verification. A successful completion of Phase I will provide a solid foundation to Phase II effort where a comprehensive technology base will be integrated and applied to produce and eventually to commercialize composite heat exchangers for ECS applications.
