Research abstract

Scientific research, particularly in fields like high-energy physics (HEP), generates vast amounts of complex data that are difficult to visualize and interpret in real time. Existing tools lack scalability for petabyte-level datasets, secure data access, data discovery through cohort building, and browser-based visualization tools. This makes it challenging for researchers to analyze experiments, make data-driven decisions, and share findings in a timely manner. A scalable, convenient, yet powerful visualization solution is needed to manage, process, and interpret large scientific datasets securely and efficiently. This project integrates JSROOT, a powerful web-based visualization tool, with Gen3, a secure cloud-based data commons platform. By containerizing JSROOT and deploying it alongside Gen3, researchers can visualize massive datasets in a AWS-hosted data commons, securely access files via presigned URLs, and leverage AI/ML models for predictive analytics. The system is designed for scalability, handling petabyte-scale datasets and supporting real-time monitoring of experiments. Through this integration, the platform provides a seamless solution for visualizing and analyzing large scientific datasets while maintaining secure, controlled access. The integration of advanced visualization with data discovery and cohort building ensures the system meets the needs of data-intensive fields like HEP. In Phase I, the project will focus on containerizing JSROOT and deploying it within the Gen3 platform, hosted on AWS. The key deliverables include setting up a secure environment for data storage and access, enabling cloud-powered visualization of ROOT files, and integrating AI/ML models for data analysis. This phase will also include extensive testing of the system’s scalability, performance, and security, particularly focusing on high-energy physics datasets. The final result will be a fully functional prototype capable of handling large-scale scientific data. The JSROOT-Gen3 platform offers significant benefits to scientific communities, including those in HEP. Researchers will be able to visualize large datasets in real time, securely share data, and integrate AI/ML models for predictive insights. This platform enhances scientific research by providing scalable tools for managing complex, multi-modal data. It also reduces the time required for data analysis and enhances collaboration across institutions by enabling secure, web-based access to data visualization tools.
