Research abstract

75484-A critical parameter for accelerator applications, including colliders and radiation generation, is the beam third-moment, which is a function of beam asymmetries, beam position, and emittance. A high-precision beam third-moment monitor requires accurate beam position and emittance measurements, while a high-precision emittance measurement requires precise beam position measurement. At present, no method exists for the non-destructive, pulse-to-pulse, simultaneous measurement of beam position, emittance, and third-moment. This project will develop a high precision cavity-based system for these simultaneous measurements, without beam interception and without moving parts. Phase I will provide analysis, and conceptual design of the resonant cavity system for the simultaneous beam position, emittance, and third-moment measurements. The system will be analyzed for magnetic lattice and cavity-derived systematic errors to determine figures of merit for achievable beam position, beam-size, emittance, and third moment resolution. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The high precision integrated measurement technique for in-line, non-destructive, pulse-to-pulse, measurement of beam position, emittance, and third-moment should be applicable to any particle accelerator where maintaining beam quality is crucial, from high energy physics accelerators to medical application accelerators. Other possible uses include other linacs, and Free Electron Lasers.
