Research abstract
Not Available Aircraft and missile platform needs are advancing the development of Global Positioning System (GPS) user equipment by requiring increasingly smaller, more affordable, and higher performance hardware. Spatial nulling techniques using Controlled Radiation Pattern Antennas (CRPAs) are very effective at countering jammers and spoofers in harsh environments. However, the size and cost of existing CRPAs make them unsuitable for new aircraft and missile platforms. Therefore, a need exists to reduce the size and cost of GPS CRPAs while maintaining or improving radiation pattern and Low Observable (LO) performance. There are established theoretical analysis and simulation tools which provide the basis for a new reduced size antenna design using higher dielectric constant materials. For example, using a material with a dielectric constant of 50, an existing element CRPA could be reduced in size from approximately a 14 inches in diameter to under 5 inches. These antenna elements will be prototyped and manufactured using advanced tools. DARPA is funding CMS and Raytheon in the development a CAD/CAM tool capable of depositing a wide variety of materials on diverse substrates ( any shape). This new mesotool , could significantly increase production rates, lower labor and material costs, and improve the yield for manufacturing GPS antennas.
