Research abstract

IN THE PAST DECADE MAJOR ADVANCES HAVE BEEN MADE TO MEET THE COMPLICATED FLOOD DETECTION AND WARNING REQUIREMENTS OF DEVELOPED COMMUNITIES. COMPUTERIZED TELEMETRY SYSTEMS HAVE MET THE NEED WITH SOPHISTICATED HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE TO MONITOR, PREDICT, AND OFFER STRATEGIES. OVERLOOKED ARE SMALL COMMUNITIES AND PROPERTY OWNERS WITH LIMITED RESOURCES WHO MUST RELY ON OUTDATED TECHNOLOGY FOR PROTECTION. THESE USERS CAN NEITHER AFFORD TO INSTALL COMPUTERIZED SYSTEMS, NOR HAVE THE TRAINED PERSONNEL TO OPERATE AND MAINTAIN THEM. TO FILL THE NEED, THIS PROJECT IS PROPOSING A DIGITAL FLOOD WARNING SYSTEM WITH AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO TELEMETRY AND REMOTE CONTROL THROUGH THE USE OF SINGLE CHIP TECHNOLOGY, AND USE OR PRESSURE SENSORS FOR WATER LEVEL MEASUREMENT. THE SYSTEM DOES NOT REQUIRE A COMPUTER TO FUNCTION AND CAN BE SET UP IN MULTIPLE REMOTE/BASE UNIT CONFIGURATIONS. A LIMITED LABORATORY PROTOTYPE WILL BE BUILT DURING PHASE I TO PROVE THE SENSOR CONCEPT AND DEMONSTRATE THE APPLICABILITY OF REMOTE CONTROL TECHNOLOGY TO TELEMETRY. HAVING PROVED THE CONCEPT, PHASE II WILL MAKE THE CIRCUIT DESIGN MORE APPLICATION SPECIFIC AND CONCENTRATE ON PACKAGING AND FIELD TESTING THE UNITS.
