Research abstract

Technology Service Corporation (TSC) proposes two frequency agility techniques designed to deny ARM receivers acquisition of the radar signals. Both techniques--Coherent Frequency Hopping (CFH) and Coherent Agile Sideband Defense (CASCADE)--attempt to avoid the ARM bandwidth by use of extensive pulse-to-pulse frequency agility, but their mechanizations differ. In its high-resolution implementation, CFH is a spread spectrum technique that is primarily applicable to radar modes that have small-to-moderate angle/range/doppler processing volumes (e.g., acquisition, track, raid assessment), while in its low-resolution implementation, it is applicable to all AIPD modes, but requires at least three receive channels to be effective. CASCADE is an innovative double-sided suppressed carrier (DS-SC) technique that is believed to be applicable to all radar modes. Phase I study tasks consist of assessing current and postulated future ARM parameters, developing the two frequency agility counter-ARM techniques, and analyzing their performance and feasibility. In the process of investigating the two techniques, their performance with linear, nonlinear, and random frequency hopping will be evaluated analytically. A plan to test these techniques during Phase II will be developed during Phase I.
