Research abstract
As the design of monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) becomes smaller, the performance of these circuits is dependent on the electromagnetic coupling between elements. Accurate modeling of these structures can eliminate the iterative process that is often required to correct for the coupling and manufacture a working device. In this proposal, we discuss a method to evaluate the commercially available electromagnetic simulation tools that can be used in the design of multi-chip modules and multi-function MMICs. This research will provide MMIC designers with invaluable information about powerful electromagnetic simulation tools. The first step in the evaluation is to establish a performance criteria to judge the various simulators. We will then evaluate the different simulators against this criteria. The end result of this research will be a thorough evaluation of the electromagnetic simulation tools that can model the separate needs of the multi-chip module and the MMIC designer. The research will be organized into a decision tool that will link a designer to an electromagnetic simulator that best fits the design needs. Through the use of this decision tool, the designer can reduce the time and money required to produce a working device.
