Research abstract

This SBIR Phase I project aims to develop a novel in-line, real time dielectric mix ratio sensor for polymer processing control based on impedance analysis. The impedance response of a polymer mixture includes along with dielectric properties, the conductance, the inductance, and the interfacial polarization of the system, and is anticipated to provide the needed sensitivity to the change of mix ratio. Preliminary experimental findings at NRC suggest that the proposed innovation can successfully sense the change of mix ratio with high resolution and accuracy in real time. The Phase I work will build on our preliminary experimental results and establish the proof-of-concept. During Phase II, the sensor will be designed and optimized with particular attention to unique needs of processing conditions, integrated with actuator, and field tested. Phase III will commercialize the technology.
