Research abstract

An innovative electro-optical laser wind sensor concept is proposed for test and evaluation which will provide cross wind aim point correction for shooting accuracy. Patented technology will allow a low cost, compact, lightweight, and eye-safe laser velocimeter system to be constructed for wind measurement. Phase I will demonstrate the ability of the laser sensor to accurately measure the cross wind and downrange wind components. Phase II is contemplated to result in a final preproduction prototype of the laser sensor along with field tests mounted to an actual weapon. An eye-safe, compact, low cost laser wind sensor has many applications in both military, law enforcement and civilian precision shooting fields. Other applications include sailing, aviation and pollution control as a wind measurement instrument. Current technology is very costly and bulky, thereby limiting the practiclity in many areas.
