Research abstract

REDUCTION OF GAS TURBINE PROPULSION SYSTEM NOISE, AND ASSOCIATED VIBRATIONS, IS AN IMPORTANT GOAL FOR FUTURE AIRCRAFT. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO USE AN INNOVATIVE METHODOLOGY TO IDENTIFY AND QUANTIFY THE PRIMARY SOURCE OF NOISE IN GAS-TURBINE COMBUSTORS AND USE THE RESULTS TO IDENTIFY A HIGH-POTENTIAL, NOISE-AVOIDANCE CONCEPT. AN INNOVATIVE UNSTEADY FLOW MODEL WILL BE USED TO IDENTIFY AND QUANTIFY THE FLUID-DYNAMIC SOURCE OF NOISE, SMALL-SCALE EXPERIMENTS WILL BE RUN TO CONFIRM THE MODEL RESULTS, AND NOISE-AVOIDANCE CONCEPTS WILL BE IDENTIFIED ANDRANKED. A BEST CONCEPT WILL THEN BE SELECTED AND RECOMMENDED FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT UNDER A PHASE II EFFORT.
