Research abstract
With Homeland Defense programs gaining attention, there is a significant need to enhance existing technologies for sensor-based perimeter defense. In Phase I we have developed a novel design for a low-power Ultra-Wide Band UHF Radar using direct digitalwaveform generation and digitization that will add deep foliage penetration capabilities to an existing X-band intrusion detection system. Phase I measurements of UHF band signal propagation through foliage show the potential for detecting a man-sizedtarget at ranges of up to a kilometer in forested areas. We have developed advanced algorithms for waveform generation and signal processing and have demonstrated the effectiveness of these algorithms in a comprehensive pulse train simulation. In Phase II,we will construct an operational prototype of this UWB radar, collect data, apply the signal processing algorithms, and demonstrate achievement of the required detection capabilities of the system in the field at Griffiss Business and Technology Park. Acommercial, portable perimeter security system with foliage-penetration capabilities could find application by military and commercial entities for protection of high-risk commercial sites (chemical plants, nuclear power plants) or for military basedefense, within the constraints of government propagation regulations.
