Research abstract

A PRACTICAL TOOL-INTERCHANGE COUPLING AND ATTENDANT TOOL SETIS NEEDED TO MAKE REMOTE MANIPULATOR SYSTEMS MUCH MORE USEFUL IN THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY. TOOL INTERFACES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED FOR UNDERSEA USE, AND THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY COULD SIMILARLY USE THESE TOOL INTERFACES. MANY DIFFERENT TOOLS COULD BE USED WITH THE REMOTE MANIPULATOR SYSTEM IF A TOOL COUPLING COULD EXCHANGE POWER, SIGNALS, AND OTHER SERVICES BETWEEN THE MANIPULATOR AND THE TOOL. PRACTICAL OPERATIONS INCLUDE WELDING, CUTTING, FASTENER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION,MACRO-INSPECTING, DRILLING, AND NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING. PHASE I TASKS INCLUDE DEFINING TOOL FUNCTIONS AND SERVICES AND DEVELOPING FROM THIS DEFINITION, A CONFIGURATION FOR A TOOL COUPLING AND SET OF TOOLS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR THENUCLEAR INDUSTRY.
