Research abstract

The project objective is to develop an integrated, hierarchical design tool for simulation of unsteady flows and prototyping of flow control strategies in high-speed combustors. The project directly addresses a need for mixed-dimensionality rapidprototyping software allowing system-level analysis that is not feasible using conventional full-scale CFD modeling. An advanced simulation environment will be used to allow full accounting of the interaction of sensor-controller-actuator-combustordynamics, in an active flow control loop. Combustor subcomponents such as sensors and actuators will be modeled using high accuracy reduced scale component models (RSCM) capable of reproducing the salient dynamics of their full-scale counterparts.Combustor dynamics will be modeled using an advanced multidisciplinary solver CFD-FASTRAN or user-supplied legacy codes. Phase I work will focus on: a) adapting existing multilevel (CFD + RSCM) simulation capability to internal flow control applications;b) developing coupled sensor and actuation system RSCMs; and c) functionality demonstration in a 2D unsteady flow control simulation. Phase II work will refine the computational environment with focus on the development of: a) a comprehensive library ofsensor, controller and actuator models; and b) GUI to facilitate system specification and sub-component connectivity, using a graphical
