Research abstract

DOD has deployed many large scale software systems that need modernization to cope with diverse and continually evolving threats; this modernization must be accomplished while budgets are declining and manpower is being reduced. The development of strategies and supporting technology that will allow the cost effective modernization in smaller, incremental steps will have widespread applicability throughout the DOD and commercial industry. The proposed effort will develop strategies for the incremental modernization of legacy software systems and identify the most promising technologies that will support the implementation of those strategies. This effort will:(1) approach the problem from both a systems engineering and software engineering perspective; (2)identify any new processes that need to be established and determine if any modifications are needed to the current processes; (3) through analysis and study, recommend the most promising technologies and identify any shortfalls or missing capabilities; (4) identify benefits and risks of using these technologies from both a technical and economic perspective. To accomplish this in a cost effective and timely manner, CCCC has assembled a team of reengineering experts who can leverage experience and available technology in the key areas. CCCC believes the resultant products will have dual-use applicability and will initiate technology transfer plans in Phase I.
