Research abstract

78363S In order to perform physics experiments with higher energy collisions, more energy and luminosity will be required. More luminosity means larger apertures and bigger magnets. In turn, the development of high field magnets will require higher performance, lower cost Nb3Sn superconductors. This project will develop and demonstrate an economical powder-in-tube (PIT) Nb3Sn process for use in high field magnets. In Phase I, two approaches are planned to demonstrate the feasibility of producing a new low cost intermetallic powder suitable for PIT implementation. Both approaches will be optimized for complete reaction and formation of the intermetallic powder. The impact on cost reduction of the conductor fabrication will be assessed for each respective method. Protoype conductors will be fabricated containing the new intermetallic powder, heat treatment optimization will be performed, and the critical properties will be measured. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The new PIT Nb3Sn conductor should have an immediate cost benefits for high field magnets in HEP applications. Another important application for Nb3Sn superconductors are fusion reactors ¿ the successful demonstration of a prototype fusion machine based on an advanced cost effective Nb3Sn conductor would have enormous economic and social benefits. Lastly, higher performance, cost effective superconductors should expand the uses for NMR, including chemical research, biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, polymer science, petroleum research, agricultural chemistry and medicine.
