Research abstract
Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) proposes to develop and demonstrate quantitative Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) imaging techniques for high-pressure gas turbine combustors. The development and demonstration experiments will be conducted in an optically-accessible combustor designed to operate at up to 50 atm with 1-2 lb/s of pre-heated air. This air supply system will be provided by PSI at no cost if the program is awarded. In the Phase I portion of the program, PSI will install a GE CFM56 injector into a modified existing combustor and demonstrate quantitative PLIF imaging of OH in the mixing and stabilization zones downstream of the injector at pressures up to 20 atm. Phase II efforts will concentrate on additional species concentration imaging and strategies for measuring fuel/air mixing levels in both production nozzles and advanced fuel injector concepts at higher pressures. Throughout the Phase I and Phase II efforts, PSI will remain in close communication with Government and commercial aeroengine manufacturers to facilitate transfer of the demonstrated techniques and measurement systems to the end-user community.
