Research abstract

THE PROPOSED PROGRAM WOULD RESULT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PORTABLE FIELD INSTRUMENT FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE TO AN ABSOLUTE ACCURACY OF 0.01 DEGREES CENTIGRADE. THE PROPOSED INSTRUMENT WOULD SUBSTANTIALLY IMPROVE OUR ABILITY TO MEASURE AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE AND, IN ADDITION, IT WOULD BE ACCURATE ENOUGH SO THAT IT COULD BECOME A STANDARD INSTRUMENT FOR THE CALIBRATION OF FIELD THERMOMETERS USING IN CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA GATHERING NETWORKS. THE MEASUREMENT OF AMBIENT TEMPERATURE IS ONE OF THE KEY MEASUREMENTS WHEN ADDRESSING THE ISSUES OF GLOBAL CLIMATIC CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING. THE PROPOSED INSTRUMENT WOULD QUANTITATIVELY IMPROVE THE ACCURACY WITH WHICH WE MEASURE THIS CRITICAL PARAMETER.
