Research abstract
IES proposes and innovative Closed-cycle Ozone Laundry process to support significant reduction of graywater waste from Navy ships in response to Navy SBIR technical subtopic N94-197. The ozonated water provides excellent cleaning and can be fully recycled for reuse by the laundry system thereby eliminating from 30 to 50 percent of a ship's graywater waste stream. The objective of this project is to determine the feasibility and cost of this technology for application to Navy submarines. This will be accomplished in five tasks: 1) Submarine laundry items will be washed using a commercial ozonated water process to show acceptable cleaning; 2) A set of feasibility and cost analyses will be performed on this concept to determine its ability to reduce graywater waste and meet all submarine requirements including significant reduction in graywater waste volume; 3) A hardware concept for a submarine laundry will be developed; 4) Design a submarine laundry Phase II prototype and write a test plan; and 5) Analyze the use of ozone to treat galley and shower waste streams. We anticipate the results to these tasks will show significant reductions in graywater waste can be achieved using ozone technology for all ships and industrial sites.
