Research abstract

An existing 3D Eulerian code for computing incompressible flows will be enhanced to enable underwater explosion simulations, focusing especially on free-field bulk cavitation, bubble growth and collapse, and bubble jetting. The emphasis will be onimproving the accuracy and efficiency of the code's algorithms for simulating underwater shock. Currently the code includes level set methods, adaptive mesh refinement and semi-implicit time integration. The code will be enhanced to include compressibilityand shock-wave effects by implementing "all-speed" methods and high-accuracy shock-capturing schemes based on ENO and WENO algorithms. Equations of state will be compatible with the U.S. Navy's underwater shock benchmark problems. The code will also bemade compatible with a standard interface that the Navy uses to do fluid-structural analysis.BENEFITS: Anticipated benefits are improved analysis capabilities, needed for evaluating and modifying the designs of U.S. Navy surface ships, submarines, andtheir internal components. These capabilities will be of interest to commercial shipbuilders, and will be useful in any serious effort to reduce ship exposure to terrorist bombings. Reduced production and operating costs, as well as lives saved, areanticipated.
