Research abstract
Metal matrix composite material (M.M.C.) applications are currently replacing Nickel base super alloys, where a higher strength to weight capability is required. One limitation in using M.M.C. materials, is its susceptibility for damage accumulation that occurs during cyclic loading. Evaluations will be performed on a representative T1-6-4 SCS-6, 0 degree fiber orientation MMC material, exhibiting one type of damage accumulation. The rejuvenation process to be developed and employed in this program will be able to restore the MMC material to a condition equal to its original physical condition. Control specimens will be used for base line information to measure the effect of the recovery process. A duplicate test for each base line test will be used for rejuvenation purposes. MBRC will perform damage accumulation analysis from a fractographic and metallographic stand point and MBRC along with Textron Lycoming will provide the analytical modeling of the damage and recovery process. MBRC's 35 years experience in materials science and materials testing and Textron Lycoming's knowledge of gas turbine design, will provide the support for a successful program.
