Research abstract

65165 The current-carrying capacity of high-temperature superconductors needs to be improved to reduce the costs and pollution associated with electric power generation, delivery, and use. Such improvements will require on-line diagnostics to detect defects in the superconducting wires as they are being manufactured. This project will develop x-ray diagnostics to provide a rapid analysis of superconducting wire crystalline texture, composition, and thickness. Phase I experiments will demonstrate the feasibility of using a modified x-ray diffraction geometry with a position-sensitive detector to provide a rapid measurement of crystalline texture. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy will be used to demonstrate a practical method for monitoring composition and thickness of the superconducting film. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: The national laboratories would be provided with a tool to speed the development of a cost-effective process for manufacturing high-temperature superconductors. The x-ray diagnostics would also be useful in the commercial sector as a quality control tool during manufacturing processes.
