Research abstract

The advancement of fusion energy technology relies on the development of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables capable of withstanding extreme operational conditions. A critical challenge in this area is quench protection - ensuring these cables’ integrity during quench, which can cause overheating and magnet failure. To address this issue, the project focuses on improving quench detection in HTS cables by including low-temperature-superconductors for quench detection, advanced quench modeling to optimize cable design, and comprehensive experimental testing. Specifically, the project will simulate and optimize the quench behavior of three existing HTS cables, design and fabricate cables incorporating a low-temperature superconducting (LTS) to assist in quench detection. By integrating experimental data with simulation insights, the project aims to significantly enhance the quench detection technique in HTS cables for fusion magnets. Successful development of these enhanced HTS cables will have broad commercial applications, particularly in the field of fusion energy, where reliable superconducting magnets are essential for reactor performance. Beyond fusion, this technology has potential applications in high-field magnet systems for medical imaging, particle accelerators, etc. offering widespread public benefits in clean energy, healthcare, and advanced scientific research.
