Research abstract

AS THE COST OF COMPUTING HAS BEEN REDUCED, ORGANIZATIONS HAVE INCREASED THEIR DEPENDENCY ON COMPUTERS. DURING THIS PERIOD OF GROWING CAPABILITIES, MANY DATABASES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED AND THE COMPUTERS CONTAINING THE DATABASES HAVE BEEN LINKED TOGETHER VIA NETWORKS. CONSEQUENTLY, THESE ORGANIZATIONS NOW HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO SHARE INFORMATION CONTAINED IN VARIOUS DATABASES DISTRIBUTED THROUGHOUT A NETWORK. WITH THE INCREASING ASPIRATION TO BUILD SMARTER SYSTEMS, KNOWLEDGE ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY NEEDS TO BE DEVELOPED TO SUPPORT FAULT-TOLERANT DISTRIBUTED KNOWLEDGE BASES. THE INNOVATIVE ASPECT OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO EXTEND THE CAPABILITIES OF A FORMALIZED KNOWLEDGE REPRESENTATION SUBSTRATE (AP5), WHICH IS CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING EXISTING AND DEVELOPING KNOWLEDGE REPRESENTATION TECHNIQUES, TO HANDLE DISTRIBUTED DATA STORAGE AND INFORMATION PROCESSING. A KNOWLEDGE-BASED SYSTEM WILL BE USED TO DYNAMICALLY ALLOCATE SYSTEM RESOURCES. THE PROJECT OBJECTIVES ARE TO DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT ALGORITHMS TO PERFORMREMOTE PROCEDURE CALLS, DISTRIBUTED DATABASE ACCESS, CONSISTENCY MAINTENANCE OF DISTRIBUTED DATABASES, AND LOAD-BALANCE THE PROCESSING ACTIVITIES OF A COMPUTER NETWORK.
