Research abstract
Not Available ALPHATECH and Atlantic Aerospace propose to study the use of numerical optimization in the antenna design process. Such a study requires not only trying optimization algorithms on design problems, but also a detailed understanding of the underlying issues involved in choosing an algorithm. When deciding if a particular algorithm is effective for antenna design, it is important that it not be judged as a black box . That is, it should not be evaluated based only upon the final solution and rate of convergence, but it is also important to judge the suitability of the algorithm for its utility in the overall design process. It is the objective of this effort to identify optimization algorithms that are suitable for antenna design in a more general, interactive optimization-based design environment that allows the designer to explore tradeoffs between design requirements. The phase I effort will produce a survey of optimization algorithms with respect to the antenna design problem as well as a prototype of a generic optimization interface to the numerical electromagnetic code (NEC). The performance of several optimization algorithm implementations will be characterized using realistic antenna design problems.
