Research abstract

TACAN Corporation proposes an innovative technology that will have a significant impact on promoting very large bandwidth wireless communications. This technology is based on the developemnt of wavelength stable semiconductor diode lasers. With this technology, an array of wavelength stable lasers can be used to communicate on multiple wavelength simultaneously. The proposed approach can have a very large bandwidth, is adaptable to many protocols, can interface to fiber-optic systems, and car be implemented for novel secure wavelength-hopping communciations systems. There are numerous applications of this technology. For example, in the communications arena our approach can provide hundreds of non-interfering wavelenths for dense wavelength division multiplexing for private/secure communications and noninterfereing wireless communications links. Applications exist in terrestrial and satellite free-space communications links as well as fiber-optic communications links. The very large bandwidth of our approach allows gigabit to terabit/sec wireless communications technology. Anticipated Benefits: Applications include personal communciations networks, satellite communications, and optical line-of-sight communications as an alternate to microwave line-of-sight communications. Moreover, our stable laser technology will facilitate stabilized diode-laser-pumps for solid-state lasers that can operate over a wide temperature range, wavelength-stable lasers for coherent communications, optical memories, dense wavelength division multiplexing fiber-optic communications systems, and rangefinders.
