Research abstract

Most E-O sensors operate in the visible and the near infrared. These sensors such as silicon and CCD arrays are very well developed resulting in high resolution and low cost. However, these sensors are limited to a spectral response of 900 to 1000nm. The mixing laser (MIXL) uses a non-linear material doped with lasing ions to create a self frequency summing or difference frequency mixing device. The MIXL is diode pumped and can be used to up-convert infrared radiation from 1.0um to 4.0um to the visible or near infrared where conventional silicon and CCD arrays operate. The MIXL can be installed on fielded sensors such as guided munitions to provide extended silicon operation into the eye-safe region or to provide frequency agility in the 1.5 to 2.0um region. The MIXL can also operate as a narrow band filter and as a laser protection device for military imaging applications.
