Research abstract

THIS PROJECT WILL DEVELOP HIGH-TEMPERATURE AMORPHOUS INTERMETALLIC ALLOYS WITH CRYSTALLIZATION TEMPERATURES, TX, AS HIGH AS 1000OC (1273K) FOR EXTENDED APPLICATION IN OXIDATION, SULFIDATION, CORROSION, WEAR, AND CATALYTIC REACTIONS. PHASE I OF THE PROJECT WILL ESTABLISH CRITERIA FOR QUANTITATIVE INTERPRETATION AND PREDICTION OF CRYSTALLIZATION TEMPERATURE OF BINARY AMORPHOUS INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS, AND DEVELOP TWO AMORPHOUS ALLOYS DESIGNED TO REACH HIGH THERMAL STABILITY. RESULTS OF THIS WORK WILL LEAD TO A PHASE II PROPOSAL FOR DEVELOPING A QUANTITATIVE UNDERSTANDING OF THE THERMAL STABILITY OF BINARY AND TERNARY AMORPHOUS ALLOYS, SYNTHESIZING A RANGE OFHIGH TEMPERATURE AMORPHOUS INTERMETALLIC ALLOYS, IDENTIFYING THEIR KEY PHYSICOCHEMICAL, CATALYTIC AND ELECTROCHEMICAL PROPERTIES RELATING TO OXIDATION, SULFIDATION, CORROSION, WEAR OR CATALYSIS, AND STUDYING FORMATION PROCESSES FOR COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION OF POWDERS, FOILS AND COATINGS.
