Research abstract
There is a need for a passive sampler that can measure chemical simulant vapor concentration in real time, and under nuclear- biological- chemical-protective light-weight clothing. Existing samplers and sampler design concepts are not able to meet this need because of bulk, difflision limitations, contamination potential, durability, sensitivity, selectivity, reliability, and cost. Nanomaterials Research Corporation will demonstrate nanocomposite sensors that can satisfy this demanding requirement matrix. The approach will be based on NRC's recent and proprietary breakthroughs with sensor design and packaging technologies. Phase I will establish the proof-of-concept. Phase II will optimize and produce prototype samplers, extensively evaluate and field test the samplers. Phase III will commercialize the technology. The military will benefit from passive samplers in the on-going efforts to protect the soldier and equipment from chemical warfare and hazardous agents used by terrorists. Passive samplers are commonly used to monitor air quality and the presence of hazardous chemicals by industry. The proposed technology will enable significant performance and reliability improvement in existing sensors.
