Research abstract

"he development of embedded software systems is commonly plagued by misseddeadlines, faulty behavior, and non-reusable, brittle code. The cause ofthese problems can commonly be tracked to a failure to reuse existing codeeffectively; "reuse" actually means copy-and-modify in practice. A betterapproach is to "refactor" existing source code into smaller, more manageablecomponents, place these components into a library, and to reuse the librarywithout change. The only problem is that this leads to a number ofcomponents that is difficult to track. Structured Query Language (SQL) is aproven technology for managing databases and is commonly used to manageextremely large datasets, often in the terabyte range, but it has not beenpreviously applied to the management of source code. The proposed effortseeks to provide a mechanism to build and track libraries of source codecomponents using SQL. Source library management has general utility for the entire softwaredevelopment community, from the development of embedded systems to games, all the way up to and including the largest clustered and distributedcomputing systems. For example, companies implementing an operating systemwould benefit from the ability to "coagulate" portions of their code intoconstituent libraries."
