Research abstract

This proposal outlines the tasks which are required to design an Infrared Multiresolution Feature Imager (MRFI) directly within the unit cell architecture of a 256 x 256 focal plane array (FPA). The device design produced during the Phase I portion of the program will prepare for a hardware development effort following in Phase II. Entirely analogous to the functional operation of the human retina, this device offers a level of on-FPA processing in an infrared device which is unparalleled by today's standards. This new technology will provide users of the future the capability of producing complete image sensing and control functions with little or no off-FPA processing required to perform a variety of autonomous tasks. Imagery from the device may be used in applications where spatial, temporal and motion features are required without the need for post-processing by digital computers. Also included with this proposal is a preliminary design of a unit cell which has the capability to perform the requisite retina-like functions for the MRFI FPA at the schematic and device layout levels.
