Research abstract
A broad spectrum of intercept receivers and other signal processing systems require an energy detector which functions reliably in the presence of narrow and wide, pulse and continuous signals, and is not optimized for one at the expense of another. The detector must provide accurate signal reporting to the operator, such as center frequency, bandwidth, S/N ratio, etc., to facilitate signal recognition, as well as grouping of multiple components of a single complex waveform. Throughout, the detecto must balance a desired probability of detection with an acceptable false alarm rate.Rome Laboratory's Adjustable Bandwidth Concept Signal Energy Detector (ABC Detector) shows promise; exploration of this technique is the subject of this proposal. The proposed effort includes a detailed analysis and computer simulation using SPWTM to fulV explore the theoretical limits of the Detector's performance. This model will be ported to MATLAB format. Additionally, as part of the proposed Phase I activity, / a hardware implementation effort, based on a digital receiver and baseband DSP processor, will be undertaken to validate the analysis. Finally, a user friendly reporting format will be defined. The early assessment of the detector's real world performance will significantly mitigate the risk normally associated with Phase II efforts.
