Research abstract
The development of the SATCOM Transceiver does not present an insurmountable challenge: well documented satellite transponders ensure that the SATCOM system designer's objectives can be accomplished with predictable results. However, only those with in-depth experience with advanced communications design and the intricacies of satellite communications can extend mission life through ultra low power SATCOM equipment. This design expertise is a delicate balance of high performance, low power, RF transceiver technology and flexible DSP for waveform generation and demodulation. Furthermore, an operational sensitivity is required: large antennas, high powered transmitters, and extended transmissions typify high profile emissions which are inconsistent with SOCOM operations Nova Engineering has the requisite experience to satisfy these technical and operational requirements: Mr. Mark Dapper, the Principal Investigator and holder of the patent for the secure voice interoperability waveform, has been designing UHF SATCOM transceivers since 1977; other team members contribute similar expertise. Furthermore, Nova's low-risk approach is leveraged from existing hardware and software. Nova's proposed program includes a thorough system/link analysis, the generation of detailed hardware and software specification including preliminary designs of a waveform/frequency agile architecture, and a SATCOM link demonstration using COTS equipment forming the basis of the subsequent Phase II design.
