Research abstract

Current angular multiplexed holographic memory systems are facing obstacles in the area of dynamic control of two dimensional page oriented data. In order to massively store high density two-dimensional images and access all these stored images in a very short time without any moving parts, an innovative page-addressing delfector is required. Existing page-addressing deflectors requires a moving mechanical optical assembly consisting of a rotation stepper motor, resulting in a poor stability and a low throughput rate.A new electro-optic beam deflector, based on domain inverted prisms in a polymer-based planar waveguide, is proposed for fast data controlling and readdressing for angular multiplexed holographic memory systems. Employment of domain inversion is much easier to be implemented using electrooptic thin film. Such a technique can be implemented on any substrate that the optical correlator is to be built. The proposed device iwll improve the deflection performance with a simplified device configuration with no moving components involved, leading to a higher stability and reproducibility of the system. Minimum angular separation for angular multiplexing is calculated to be min - 0.010 degree, which gives 1000 resolvable spots by using the proposed deflector that provides 10 degree deflection angle at 200 volt across a 10um EO polymer film. NOte that the frequency-shift associated with acoustooptic Bragg cell is eleminated in this case. Such a device will be demonstrated in the phase I program.
