Research abstract

THE PHASE 1 PROJECT INVESTIGATES WHETHER RECENT ADVANCES IN OPTICAL AND THERMAL DETECTORS, AND FIBER-OPTICS CAN BE APPLIED TO MONITOR INDIVIDUAL LAMPS IN AIRPORT APPROACH LIGHTING SYSTEMS. PHASE 1 CONCENTRATES THE TECHNICAL EFFORT ON RESEARCH TO MATCH LAMP AND SENSOR CHARACTERISTICS, A DEFINITION OF THE LAMP NETWORK LINE IMPDEANCE AND NOISE MODELS, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF APPROPRIATE SERIES POWER-LINE SPREAD SPECTRUM COMMUNICATION TECHNIQUES. THE PROJECT DEVELOPS A RELIABLE REMOTE SENSOR WITH A POTENTIAL VOLUME RETROFIT COST LESS THAN THE BULB. THE STUDY CONDUCTS RESEARCH, EXAMINES REQUIREMENTS, EVALUATES ALTERNATE PHOTOMETRIC AND RADIOMETRIC SENSORS, DETERMINES THE DOMINANT DESIGN FACTORS, DEFINES AN AFFORADABLE RETROFIT SOLUTION, ANALYZES FEASIBILITY AND COST, AND DEFINES A PRELIMINARY DESIGN.
