Research abstract

In order to realize the full potential of cryogenic power converters, it is vital to develop the technology for cryogenic capacitors and inductors, in order to be combined with the switching semiconductors. Capacitors with high dielectric constant and high voltage withstand at cryogenic temperatures with low weight and volume lie on the critical path. The proposed work focuses on innovative technology to demonstrate large capacitance values, as well as ferromagnetic core materials and overall optimal design for cryogenic inductors. The passive components will be designed to enable scale up to megawatt class power converter systems. The power converter will be designed to maximize the benefits of the cryogenic environment, while keeping heat loads to a minimum, using resonant and soft-switching techniques.
