Research abstract

Fleet Readiness Centers are responsible for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of USN aircraft and components.  To prepare for the needs of the future, NAVAIR requires developments in robotic automation, machine learning (ML), computer vision, and artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve these goals for both rotary and fixed wing aircraft.   In this proposal, Texas Research Institute Austin will leverage significant previous experience in developing non-destructive inspection methodologies and integrating them with Collaborative Robotics (Co-Bots) and demonstrate this capability on both metallic and composite skinned aircraft.  The technology areas of interest that this proposal will address include: Advanced Robotic Systems Integration for Aircraft Maintenance and Repair: This will focus on nondestructive inspections to improve inspection quality and assist human operators in successfully performing the inspection activity. Human-Robot Collaboration and Safety in Aviation MRO: Effective human-robot collaboration allows human inspectors to still retain control over an inspection and its interpretation and improve upon human performance factors, providing improved inspection results, lower overall sustainment costs, and increased weapon system availability. Emerging Technologies for Autonomous Aviation Maintenance: Integration of machine vision capabilities will be performed to allow the Co-Bot to setup inspections, maximizing overall inspection efficiency and effectiveness.
