Research abstract

Digital Traffic Systems, Inc. has previously developed and sells commercially an Intelligent Camera System that interprets video images of the road traffic and computes traffic parameters including: Queue Length (Vehicle count), Flow Speed (miles per hour), Density (vehicles per mile), volume (vehicles per hour), Lane Occupancy (percent of lance occupied) and Headway (average distance| feet between cars). The video system is part of a larger ¿Travel Advisory¿ operating system that provides traffic information and traffic avoidance routing to wireless, Radio/TV, telematics units, and streaming video to Internet sites. We have proposed software modifications to the system software for the measurement of vehicle motions that are relevant to ¿Traffic Law Enforcement¿. These traffic parameters include: speeding, going too slowly for conditions, running red lights, illegal turning movements, unsafe or illegal lane changes, following too closely, traffic weaving, driving on the shoulder, emergency lanes or driving outside of traffic lanes, driving the wrong way on the road, and driving without lights during dark hours or with lights not functioning properly. The system is able to tag vehicles that exhibit the above parameters of aggressive high-risk driving, image the vehicle and send the information to traffic law enforcement authorities.
