Research abstract

50796-98-I Interactive Web Technologies for Dissemination of Scientific Graphics--Scientific Digital Visions, Inc., 2 North Second Street, Suite 1215, San Jose, CA 95113-1310; (408) 289-8494 Mr. Robert Sutton, Principal Investigator Dr. Craig Stone, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG03-98ER82665 Amount: $73,984 The electronics dissemination of scientific graphics currently focuses on transmission of server- archived images. These methods do not allow scientists to interact with the images and generally limit the information content. Storage and transmission of images is unnecessary and slows the dissemination process. This project will develop an interactive software tool to support the dissemination of scientific graphics. The technologies will be developed both as a Java applet and stand-alone application and will allow images to be disseminated as a data collection and appearance script. Phase I will define the model for the graphics tools. Software prototypes will be constructed to test the utility of the graphics tool and refine the model. Possible uses of the technology at the National Nuclear Data Center and as a helper application for other software developed by the U.S. and Internal Nuclear Data Communities will be studied. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: A Java-based graphics tool can be used by national laboratories, universities, publishers and businesses to publish interactive technical graphs. The technology also has value in stock market tracking programs and to manufacturers of instruments and instrument console panels._
