Research abstract

75268-A need exists for higher performance radio frequency drivers for advanced accelerators used in High Energy Physics (HEP) research. Although university research is being performed on a promising device, the gyroklystron, it will not be capable of operation at the required duty factor or be suitable for production. This project will develop a Ku band, 80 MW gyroklystron suitable for HEP accelerators. To allow for operation at high duty factor, an inverted Magnetron Injection Gun will be used to support and cool the inner conductor of the coaxial cavity. In Phase I, simulation techniques, along with mechanical design methods appropriate for industrial microwave tubes, will be used to realize a complete design for the gyroklystron. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: An advanced accelerator would require many tubes, and thus constitute in itself an acceptable market. In addition, the concepts should be applicable to lower power gyroklystrons of interest to fusion, radar, and scientific instrumentation. Other potential applications include medical accelerators.
