Research abstract

HYPERSONIC FLIGHT REQUIRES COOLING OF THE LEADING EDGE OF THE AIRFOILS AND INTERNAL ENGINE PARTS. THIS COOLING CAN BE PROVIDED BY ENDOTHERMIC FUEL REACTIONS. METHANOL DISSOCIATION CAN PROVIDE MORE HEAT SINK CAPACITY THAN PREVIOUSLY PROPOSED REACTIONS SUCH AS THE DEHYDROGENATION OF METHYLCYCLOHEXANE. METHANOL DECOMPOSITION CATALYSTS WILL BE PREPARED THAT HAVE HIGH ACTIVITY AND SELECTIVITY TO METHANOL DECOMPOSITION, HIGH TEMPERATURE STABILITY AND HIGH MECHANICALSTRENGTH. THESE CATALYSTS WILL BE TESTED IN A PLUG FLOW MICROCATALYTIC REACTOR. DATA FROM THE TESTS WILL BE USED TO PERFORM A SYSTEMSANALYSIS TO DETERMINE THE MISSION BENEFITS PROVIDED BY THE DISSOCIATEDMETHANOL HEAT SINK TO HYPERSONIC AIRCRAFT.
