Research abstract

There is a tremendous need for an innovative visual modeling environment or GraphicalUser Interface (GUI), for the Turbine Engine Reverse Modeling Aid Program (TERMAP).Although TERMAP is the primary modeling tool used by the Aviation & Missile Command (AMCOM),the Air Force, the National Air Intelligence Center (NAIC), and DoD to model gas turbineengine propulsion systems, it is cumbersome, difficult to learn, and time consumingto use. The Phase I successfully resulted in an innovative, user-friendly GUI which modelsa mixed-flow turbofan engine configuration, analyzes the configured system with TERMAP,and graphically displays results. The Phase II will extend this technology in anincremental fashion to incorporate TERMAP's numerous modeling capabilities as follows:graphically construct various engine cycles, extensively analyze engine design and off-design conditions, perform advanced cycle variable manipulation, perform advanced mappingcapabilities, and graphically present results for uninstalled and installed engineperformance. The Phase II will also have the capability to interoperate with othersoftware programs via a Common Object Rquest Broker Architecture (CORBA) interface. The Phase II product will consist of an integrated, tested, and documented user-friendly,Windows-based GUI for TERMAP. This innovation will likewise reduce engine design and developmentcosts and expedite achievement of Army and DoD program objectives.
