Research abstract
We propose to develop explosively clad armors of titanium and ultra-high hardness steel (UHHS) to precede protection against small-arms projectiles. The superior ballistic resistance of UHHS will be combined with the efficient structural characteristics of titanium in a laminate composite fabricated by explosive cladding or welding. In Phase i, several configurations will be prepared and tested to investigate the feasibility of such armor systems to provide mass-efficient protection against small-caliber penetrators. The potential result is an inexpensive, high-protection armor system with superior multi-hit resistance and structural load-bearing capacity, producible in complex shapes.
