Research abstract

A MAGNETRON PHASE-PRIMING METHOD, DISTINCT FROM INJECTION- OR PHASE-LOCKING TECHNIQUES, WILL BE EXPLORED IN PHASE I AS A MEANS OF CONTROLLING THE STARTING PHASE OF MAGNETRON ARRAYS FOR USE IN RADIO FREQUENCY (RF) LINEAR ACCELERATORS (INACS)AT HIGH GAINS (LOW PHASE-PRIMING RF POWER). SEVERAL INNOVATIVE METHODS FOR ASSURING THAT THE STARTING PHASE IS ACCURATELY PRESERVED THROUGHOUT THE PULSE, INCLUDING NOVEL MODULATOR CONCEPTS, WILL ALSO BE STUDIED. ADVANTAGES OF THE APPROACH INCLUDE OVERALL EFFICIENCIES TWICE THOSE OF COMPETING APPROACHES, LOW MANUFACTURING AND OPERATING COSTS, AND HIGH RELIABILITY. THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE IS TO EXPERIMENTALLY DEMONSTRATE THE APPROACH USING A MULTIKILOWATT MAGNETRON ARRAY.
