Research abstract

Computer Based Training (CBT) systems have been shown to promote high learning training effectiveness and cost effectiveness. To get effective training from these systems, specific technical knowledge needs capturing. Unfortunately, the task of accessing the knowledge stored in the technicians brains and recording this knowledge has remained difficult and expensive. The proposed work would attempt to automate the task of re- trieving and storing technical data for use by CBT systems. The "Electronic Capture and Handling, Integrated Engineering Facts" (e-Chief) system would provide an effective method of obtaining the knowledge from the individual and using it in multiple, broad-based CBT applications, in a phased approach. The e-Chief system would incorporate a cognitive science model of knowledge elicitation. The e-Chief system would incorporate an Instructional Systems Design (ISD) model of training design. Phase one has two objectives, First, to specify a system design specification for the processes and tools required to effectively transmit technical knowledge from a practitioner to the computer data base. Second, RDC would perform a preliminary task analysis on a domain of the clients choosing to test the data structures required to capture knowledge from a technical expert.
