Research abstract
Current gas turbine smoke meter measurements are based on an empirical reflectance measurement, which gives a relative emissions indicator. The proposed optical technique is based on an integrated combination of single particle counting, and ensemblescattering. This method provides a direct and real-time measure of the absolute particle concentration over a wide concentration and particle size range that encompasses gas turbine particulate emissions. The technique can be implemented as a stand-alonenon-intrusive sensor or in-line with other gas composition measurements. The optimum trade-offs in sensor performance vs. ease of operation will dictate the optimal configuration for the proposed technique. Real-time, continuous smoke-meter for gasturbine applications. Technique is applicable to military aircraft or commercial air-craft or power generation turbines. Also applies to stack gas emissions from industrial manufacturing
