Research abstract

Circulatory Technology Incorporated (CTI) responds to the Department of the Navy's solicitation topic N96-167 titled "Container for Storing and Processing Injectable Carbon Dioxide-Containing Fluids and Freeze-Dried Blood Components". In particular CTI proposes to develop a specially designed, multicompartment container that possesses unique features to facilitate meeting the stated requirements. The overall aim of Phase I is to design and, in the Phase I Option, to prototype a lightweight, flexible, sterilizable, biocompatible, multicompartment container to store gas-containing fluids and freeze-dried blood components. The container will support the conditions of lyophilization (low temperature and high vacuum),and will retain carbon dioxide at a concentration of at least 45 mmHg pressure for at least one year. It will be designed to maximize the exposed surface area of frozen blood while respecting the requirement of uniform freezing and drying of its contents, minimization of storage space, and limitation of exchange of ambient gases and water vapor after sealing.
