Research abstract

SDL, Inc. proposes to develop a blue laser module containing a high power semiconductor laser coupled to a nonlinear waveguide for second harmonic generation. This module will be lightweight, compact, and designed for low cost manufacturability. In Phase I SDL will develop a novel nonlinear waveguide structure and study its interaction with a laser diode for blue light generation. The waveguide will be further optimized in Phase II and the packaging technologies for the complete blue laser module will be developed. SDL will agreesively market these products upon the completion of their development. Technical Benefits: The blue laser module will address the needs of major commercial markets including optical data storage, video display technology, color printing, and medical diagnostics
